Has your pet been itchier lately?
Are they licking, chewing or biting at themselves a lot more in the last few weeks? Recent increases in pollen counts may be the reason that your pet is having problems. When an animal has an allergy to pollen, they react by an increase in itch when that pollen count rises. You may also notice that their skin is red, moist or that they are losing hair. Their ears may be red, contain a discharge or smell.
If your pet is already being treated for allergies with allergy shots (immunotherapy), keep in mind that they may need a little extra help when pollen counts soar. Keeping secondary infections under control is a very important part of controlling your pet’s allergies. If they are getting worse lately, consider a recheck appointment with your dermatologist. Often, identification of new infections and proper treatment can bring a recent allergy flare back under control improving the pet’s quality of life.
